Ismael Gozalo is most famous as winemaker and winegrower at Ossian in Rueda, but since 1998 he has made his own unique wines from his family’s vineyards in the hamlet of Nieva. The vines are up to 200 years old and pre-Phylloxera, at 800-900 metres above sea level, on sandy soil and having never seen chemical treatment. In the cellar, Ismael uses amphore when he can, and is obsessed with the seasonal moulds that coats the ceramic vessels throughout the year, each strain lending their own character to the finished wines.
