Il Colle was begun in 1972 by Alberto Carli, assisted in winemaking by his friend Giulio Gambelli, the maestro behind Poggio di Sotto, Montevertine and Soldera. Alberto passed away in 2001, leaving his daughter Caterina to learn from the old master until 2011. She now has sole responsibility for the winemaking and blending, and, judging by the wines currently in bottle and cask, the legacy is in safe hands. The Brunello is aged for long enough to be classified Riserva, but Gambelli believed that “a Riserva comes but once in a lifetime”. Something to look forward to, then.
