Pietranico rises up on the slopes of the Gran Sasso mountain, very close to the Adriatic sea and between two national Parks. Here, at 400 meters above sea level, we find Luca and Alfonso. Luca became inspired to work with wine after spending a vintage with fellow Winemakers club producer, Franceso Guccione, in Sicily. He partnered with local farmer Alfonso, who has been farming in the region for many year and brings with him great knowledge of the terroir, local varieties and styles of wines.
The project was started from scratch sourcing a large portion of their vines from the cuttings of Emideo Pepe’s old vines. Only Trebbiano and Montepulciano are planted.
Between and around the vines they also grow olive trees and ancient wheats, keeping apiaries for help in pollination but also to maintain the harmony and biodiversity.
As of this moment they do not have a proper winery of their own. Wines are made in steel at this time, as this is all they have. Luca though looks forward to the day when he and Alfonso can experiment with concrete and wood.
